Jaegermeister APRA/AMCOS New Zealand Music Commission
Native Tongue Music Publishing Ltd Made from New Zealand

Who's Involved?

Independent Music New Zealand (IMNZ) and Phonographic Performances New Zealand (PPNZ) are the principal music industry supporters of the Taite Music Prize in conjunction with the Taite family.

Additionally, the prize could not have been established without the fantastic support from Jagermeister and the team at Hancock's who are committed to supporting creative New Zealand Music in all its forms.

We would also like to acknowledge the assistance we have had from the NZ music Commission, The Australasian performing rights society (APRA) and NZ on Air, who have all lent their support and encouragement in drawing attention to this critical award.

Principal Industry Partners

Independent Music New Zealand

IMNZ is the New Zealand voice for independent record labels and distributors. Our members release the bulk of New Zealand music, including commercially successful artists as well as niche music genres. IMNZ started in 2001 and now has over 70+ members. These labels and distributors collectively represent the majority of all musical acts in NZ, producing the best music on the planet, but hey we're biased!

IMNZ advocates for our members rights, working to spread their message, and lobbies for any changes to the industry that will benefit local labels and their artists. Some of the issues where it is important to represent the interests of our members include government legislation and the copyright act, quotas, commercial and non-commercial radio, parallel importing, government funding allocation and music policy, online licensing, piracy, synchronisation licensing and many others.

Previous to IMNZ there has been no single organisation advocating the interests of one of the most important parts of the New Zealand music industry - that is, independent New Zealand owned companies. These are the businesses that have been, and continue to be, the most supportive of New Zealand music.

Phonographic Performances New Zealand (PPNZ)

PPNZ is a not-for-profit company that manages and administers the rights of New Zealand recording artists and labels. We licence and collect income from the broadcast and public performance of sound and video recordings, and we distribute this income back to artists and labels.

There are at least two copyrights in any music or video recording. One is for the composer or songwriter, and this is administered by APRA. The other is for the recording artist and the owner of the sound recording (which is often a record label), and this is administered by PPNZ So every time you play music in public (i.e. a non-domestic setting) there are these two licence fees to pay.

As well as licence fees collected from television, radio, web and mobile broadcasters, PPNZ also collects licence fees from over 12,000 business premises including bars, clubs, restaurants, shops, gyms - in fact any business who plays music to enhance their customers' experience.

We currently have over 1400 local aritsts in our innovative Artist Direct Scheme (which ensures local artists receive performance royalties directly), as well as 59 member labels and distributors representing both local and international artists. All the income we collect, less administration costs, is distributed to these artists and NZ-based labels and distributors.

If you are a recording artist or label and have released a single, album or video, you may be eligible for a share of the royalties collected by PPNZ. To register, or find out more information, visit us at www.ppnz.co.nz or contact Dean Cameron dean@ppnz.co.nz / 09 360 5085
